The young adult fantasy novel Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo is the first book in the duology, followed by Crooked Kingdom. This novel deals with themes of corruption, deception, and betrayal.
Synopsis
Two years after the events of the Shadow and Bone trilogy, a new threat comes for the Grisha. Grisha are powerful individuals who can summon the elements, tailor appearances, manipulate matter, or stop a heart from beating.
Kaz Brekker, a seventeen-year-old gang leader, is hired to accomplish an impossible heist. He and his gang are tasked with the mission to uncover what is causing the Grisha to have acquired heightened abilities and what is turning them into addicted killing machines. Undaunted by the challenge, he recruits an elite team of criminals, killers, and an intelligent runaway.
Review
The story is told in the third person. Each chapter jumps between the characters and shares their side of the story, revealing dark pasts and buried secrets. This was an entertaining read. There were many twists and turns I didn’t expect and it kept me guessing. I wanted to know what would happen next.
Having seen the Netflix series before reading anything related to the Grishaverse, I enjoyed going back for a rewatch and seeing specific scenes from Six of Crows play out on screen.
